Wanderlist Discover: Los Roques, Venezuela

Ever feel like running away from it all, and just heading out to a beach, where you could watch the waves roll in, and maybe have a beer and just chill, without a care in the world. Well, if you do, Los Roques archipelago could be the right place for you. A tiny deserted group of islands, off the South American coast, Los Roques is a slice of undiscovered paradise in the Caribbean. If you are expecting large hotels, cruise ships in the harbour or even boutiques selling cheap souvenirs, Los Roques is not the place for you. But, if you love vast expanses of sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that are a snorkelers dream come true, this is the place to be. Instead of boisterous tourists everywhere, expect to share the beach with pelicans, boobies and sea turtles soaking up the warm sun. After all, the islands are home to over almost species of indigenous birds and even more fish.

  • Scuba Diving : Los Roques has some of the best coral reefs in the Caribbean, and the region is famous for underwater immersions. La Guaza in particular is a region that plunges almost 150 feet down, and allows divers a view of colourful corals, sea turtles and thousands of other tiny fish that seem to surround the diver as they plunge into the ocean.

  • Ride an Ultralight Glider : The islands have a couple of operators who can hook you up to an ultra glider, and you can take in an unparalleled view of the archipelago from the top. Nothing can beat the thrill of gliding in the sky, with nothing but the beach and the waves below you.

  • Unwind : Los Roques is not necessarily the place to visit for an action packed beach holiday. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the combination of the sun, sea and the sand. Lay down on a secluded part of the beach and keep your smartphone away for a while. Listen to the waves roll in and read a book. Indulge in the simple pleasures in life.
