Cape Town is a young, vibrant city along the western coast of South Africa. It offers amazing food, weather, and stunning scenery!

Useful Information

  • Visa is not required for Canadians
  • Airport:
    • Cape Town International Airport (CPT)
    • ~ 30-40 mins drive to central Cape Town
  • Currency: South African Rand (ZAR)
  • Driving Tips:
    • Having access to a car is the safest and most convenient way to get around
    • Drive on the left side of the road (opposite of North America)
    • Street parking is available and convenient; you pay a parking marshal (whether employed by the city or an “unofficial” one – standard rate is ~10 ZAR)
  • Accommodations:

      • Once in Capetown
    • Hotels:
      • There are a lot of luxury seaside accommodations
    • AirBnB

What to do

  • Hiking:
    • Lions Head
      • There are a lot of tour companies that guide you to the top of Lions head, but it’s easy enough to figure it out on your own
      • Adventure rating: 7
    • Table Mountain
      • Same as above
      • There is also a cable car that you can take up to the top
        • Ticket price: ~200 ZAR
    • Signal Hill
      • Nice place to get a somewhat panoramic view of the city
  • Wineries: Stellenbosch
    • Waterford Wine Estate
      • Specialize in wine and chocolate pairings
  • Beaches: Camps Bay Beach, Clifton Beach,
  • Sea Point Pavilion / Promenade
  • Cape Point
    • There are a lot of tour companies that offer a variety of tours to Cape Point from Cape Town, most popular are bus tours, biking tours
    • Day Trippers
      • Organized tour with a combination of bus ride, biking, and hiking
      • Adventure Rating: 3
      • Note: If I were to do it again, I would do it on my own without a tour group
  • Boulder Beach (South African Penguins)
  • Bree Street (hip street, cool shops, restaurants, bars)
  • Kloof nek Road
